Start with the trip constraint

Region decision Northern vs Southern California: which coast to plan your first trip around California is too big to see in one trip, so pick a region and base, not a statewide loop. The Northern California coast — Sausalito, Mendocino, Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur — is cooler, foggier, and more about dramatic coastline and redwoods. The Southern California coast — Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, La Jolla, and Catalina — is warmer, more about beaches and cities, and easier with kids. Palm Springs desert and Lake Tahoe are add-ons that pull you inland. Choose by weather, driving tolerance, and whether you want scenery or beach time. Coast route planner Driving Highway 1: Monterey, Big Sur, and the coast south to Santa Barbara Drive Highway 1 north to south so the ocean is on your right and the pullouts are on your side, and give the Monterey-to-Santa Barbara stretch a full day at least. The road is open end to end as of 2026 after the Regent's Slide reopening, but expect signal-controlled one-way sections near Big Sur, almost no gas or cell signal for about 90 miles, and a closed McWay Falls overlook trail. Base in Carmel or Monterey at the north end, add a Big Sur night if you want the coast after the day-trippers leave, and finish in Santa Barbara. Pick the region first, then anchor each day on one aquarium or pier and keep the beach loose.
